TO RESCUE
Lost and stray DOGS in West Deer Township.

TO SHELTER
Lost and stray DOGS in need of shelter, protection or medical care.

TO ADOPT
Lost DOGS back to their owners, unclaimed, abused and homeless DOGS to new families.

TO TEACH
DOGS, people and the community to  live in harmony with each other through education.

West Deer Dog Shelter is operated by West Deer Township as a service to the community. It is the only township operated dog shelter in the area. It is staffed by volunteers and support from the community.

The shelter helps stray and lost dogs of West Deer Township. An attempt is made to reunite lost dogs with their owners, if an owner cannot be found the dogs are given vaccinations, neutered or spayed, and given a health check by our vet. They are then placed in loving indoor homes.

The shelter holds a maximum of twelve dogs. Unlike larger shelters, our animals are not usually living in cages. They have the freedom to come in the building or out into a large fenced-in area. This allows the dogs to remain socialized and not become cage bound.

Mr. Gary Bogan, the Animal Control and Code Enforcement Officer of West Deer Township, oversees the volunteers, speaks at local schools on the responsibility and care of animals, and handles all dog complaints.

Volunteers are available to speak to any size group, including a group of neighbors in someone's home, on how to teach children to react in possible scary situations involving dogs, the care of dogs and other topics.

11-21-08 Mitchell is recovering nicely from his eye surgery.

11-14-08 Mitchell has been to the vet and will need eye surgery.  It will be done 11-29-08.  He has adjusted quickly to the shelter and has been groomed twice.  Thanks to Ruth Lippke for giving so much of her time working on his coat so he didn't have to be shaved. He is really being a very good boy.

11-5-8 5:30PM.  HE IS SAFE IN THE SHELTER THANKS TO A YOUNG WOMAN WHO WAS ABLE TO MAKE FRIENDS WITH HIM AND GET A LEASH ON HIM.  I CANNOT THANK HER ENOUGH FOR HER GOOD SAMARITAN ACT.

This poor dog has been abandoned in Deer Lakes Park.  We have set up a feeding station for him and we are attempting to catch him.  He is very leery of coming to people. He was first seen on early Saturday morning 11-1-08.

Any info or help would be greatly appreciated. Please call 724-224-5291.

The dog has showed no aggression to people who walk in the park with their dogs.  He remains aloof and walks away.  He will give a small growl when he is at the food dish but he has always walked away when approached.

Plato is a 3 yr male lab mix.  He is a wonderful dog.  He does well with the other dogs, sits, and has been very well behaved here.

Aristostle is a male pit mix between 2 and 4 yrs old.  He loves people and

has shown no aggression.

Winston is approx. 4 yrs.  He is shy but not aggressive in any way.  He wants to be friends he is just not sure if he is going to be abandoned again.  He is adjusting to the shelter especially good with the other dogs.

Bessie is an older beagle probably around 8 yrs.  She is very sweet and lies down to get her tummy scratched every chance she gets.

Gretchen is about 10 yrs old.  She appears to be housebroken.  She had to have dental surgery due to several badly infected teeth.  She is doing really well and going for walks.

Joney is a 10 yr old possible terrier/retriever mix. He is quite active for his age. He likes riding in the car and going for walks. He didn't like having his toenails cut at first but with our groomers patience and time he is now accepting having it done.  Because of his age we recommend an adult home.

Shiloh is a beagle male mix.  He is shy of people but is slowly adjusting to all the new things at the shelter.  He does very well with the other dogs.  He has never growled or snapped even though is scared of new people.  He needs someone to love him and teach him to trust again.

Rachel is an older chow chow.  She is not your typical chow chow as she is very mellow and nice.  She likes easy walks and to lay around and watch the world go by.  It took 4 hrs to shave her.  It was like shearing a sheep.  She was very tolerant and patient about the whole ordeal.

Socrates is about 18 months old. He has been very good and rarely barks.
