THE K-9 UNIT AND IT'S GOALS
The West Deer Township Police k-9 unit is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The unit operates throughout the township and consists of one team, Officer Edward Newman and his partner Jimmi. The unit began in December of 1998 with funding from government grants and a grant from the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office Drug Forfeiture Fund. A German Shepherd, a breed with intelligence, strength and loyalty, was selected and imported from Czechoslovakia to train as our police service dog. The dog underwent extensive training with its handler. The training was conducted by Strategic Law Enforcement K-9 Training in North Huntington Pa, and then certified by North American Police Work Dog Association. This K-9 (Bars) served the township from 1998 to 1997. The K-9 team, now consisting of Officer Newman and K-9 Jimmi, is dual certified in Patrol work and Narcotics Detection.
