West Deer Food Bank

west-deer-food-bankIn the early to mid 1980s, the steel industry collapsed in Pittsburgh. The number of steelworkers in the Pittsburgh area dropped 50% in just four years. Tens of thousands steelworkers were  unemployed.

During the recession in 1982, The West Deer Food Bank (WDFB) was founded. Many families were without food. Sherry Smith and other volunteers helped provide food to 59 needy families in the community. WDFB vows to continue its service until it is no longer necessary.

The West Deer Food Bank depends on donations from citizens and government subsidies to purchase groceries and for other expenses

The WD Food Bank is run by volunteers. Donations of money are kindly accepted. Food is distributed the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
