Trash collection service in West Deer Township is MANDATORY.

The West Deer Township Board of Supervisors awarded the current weekly Residential Solid Waste and Bi-Weekly Recyclable Material Collection Contract to:

Shank Waste Service Inc. does not service customers on the following six national holidays, when they fall on a weekday: New Year’s Day; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Thanksgiving Day; and Christmas Day.  If the scheduled collection day falls on or after a weekday holiday, collection will be one (1) day later.  If the collection day falls before a weekday holiday, there will be no change in waste collections.

Trash Collection

  1. Trash should be at the curb (within 5 feet of the road where the truck travels) on your collection day by 6:00 a.m.
  2. ALL trash should be bagged, bundled, or contained in some manner. Each parcel should weigh no more than 40 lbs.  Do NOT use grocery bags, paper bags, cardboard boxes or 55 gallon drums as garbage receptacles.
  3. SHANK WASTE SERVICE INC. DOES NOT ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING: Dirt, sod, rocks, bricks, cement, building material (including paint), remodeling materials, and/or freon (refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, or air conditioners). Please contact Shank Waste Service Inc. for more information on disposal of these items.
  4. NO TELEVISIONS, computers, or propane tanks. Please see the electronics disposal section below.
  5. Trash not put out on time or not prepared properly will be picked up your next scheduled pickup day.
  6. Please call Shank Waste Service Inc. at least 24 hours in advance of your collection day to dispose of larger items such as furniture.
  7.  Carpet, rugs, and padding must be cut in sections no longer than 4ft., be securely rolled and tied and not over 30 lbs. Please contact Shank Waste Service Inc. in advance if more than five (5) bundled sections per week are to be picked up. No whole-house remodels.
  8. Hedge cuttings, limbs, and branches from trees, not exceeding three (3) inches in diameter and only if securely tied in bundles not exceeding forty-eight (48) inches.
  9. Mattress/box springs: for our worker’s protection, mattress must be wrapped in plastic and taped securely closed with duct or packing tape to prevent any possible exposure to infectious pests such as bedbugs, fleas, etc.
Recycling

  1. Recycling is BI-WEEKLY, and on the same day as your regular trash collection.
  2. The following items are included in the Township’s recycling program: Clear and colored glass, aluminum and bi-metal cans, plastics (#1, #2 and #5) Please look on the bottom of the container. Most small mouthed plastic bottles and jugs such as milk jugs, soda bottles, detergent and shampoo bottles, etc. are acceptable plastics.
  3. It is not necessary to wash your recyclables, but PLEASE rinse all food and residue from items set out for collection.
  4. Recycling bins are available at the Township Building for $12 (the cost to the Township).
  5. A recycling calendar can be picked up at the Township office or click here.
  6. Newspapers and magazines will be picked up if placed in a paper bag or securely bundled/tied with string/twine.  Please place under or behind your recycling bin.
  7. There are numerous green and yellow Paper Retriever paper recycling bins throughout the Township. (See list below).  Products accepted are: Magazines, catalogs, newspaper, office and school paper, and mail. Cardboard, telephone books, and plastic bags are NOT accepted.

Senior Citizen Sticker Program

This optional program is available to residents who are 65 or older. The cost is $3.00/sticker with a minimum requirement of twelve stickers per year. In order to be eligible, a resident must first show proof of age at the West Deer Township office. After confirmation, stickers can then be purchased through Shank Waste Service Inc.  The sticker must be placed on EACH bag set out for collection.

Seniors are advised to contact Shank Waste Service Inc. directly for more information on this program and to see if the Program would benefit them.

Leaf Collection

Shank Waste Service Inc. will pick up leaves during specific dates in the spring and fall dates will be advertised by the Township. Leaves MUST be in biodegradable paper leaf composting bags (NO PLASTIC BAGS).  On the assigned day place the biodegradable leaf bags in front of the homes at curbside by 6:00 a.m.

The Township sells biodegradable leaf bags at the Township Building for $3.00/pack of five, or they can be purchased at stores such as Wal-Mart, Home Depot, etc.

Christmas Tree Collection

Shank Waste Service Inc. will pick up Christmas trees at the curb in the months of December, January, and February. You must remove decorations. Cut tree so the branch spread is no more than 6ft across, and tree length is no more than six feet, and not weighing more than 30 lbs.

Disposal of Electronics:

Effective January 24, 2013, Pennsylvania State Law states that the following devices MUST BE RECYCLED:

  • Televisions, monitors, laptops (anything with a screen over 5”).
  • Computers, printers, keyboards, peripherals (anything attached to a computer).

The Law bans the disposal of TV’s and computer equipment at transfer stations and landfills. Because of this, Morrow Refuse cannot take these electronics.

  • Goodwill stores will accept ONLY computers and computer equipment (working and non-working). No televisions are accepted. Please call them before taking items to be sure of what they are accepting.
  • Best Buy stores accept MOST types of electronics. No televisions are accepted.

Hard-to-Recycle and Household Chemicals Collection Events

These events are held every year by the Allegheny County Health Department and the Pennsylvania Resources Council. Locally, the hard-to-recycle event is held in the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills parking lot. The household chemicals event occurs at North Park. PENNSYLVANIA RESOURCES COUNCIL TAKES OVER STATE RECYCLING HOTLINE

On July 1, 2016 PRC took over operations of the PA Department of Environmental Protection’s Recycling Hotline. The hotline was created to offer residents of Pennsylvania a resource to get answers to their recycling related questions.

Pennsylvanians are invited to call the Recycling Hotline at 1-800-346-4242 to find convenient recycling options for electronics, household chemicals, tires, televisions and more. The Hotline is operated every weekday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All after hour calls are returned the following business day to be sure no question goes unanswered.
