Parks and Recreation

Being a laid-back suburban/rural community, recreation is one of the Township priorities.
There are two major recreational facilities in West Deer Township. One is a Township Park, and the other is a County Park

Bairdford Park Map

Bairdford Park is a 94-acre Township park, located centrally in the Township within the former coal mining town of Bairdford. It is the home of the Deer Lakes Youth Baseball, Soccer, and Softball organizations. This park is designed for active recreation and includes seven baseball/softball fields, the Moskala soccer fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, a dek hockey court, sand volleyball court, picnic areas, playground equipment, and a large pavilion, which can be rented for family reunions, company picnics, etc. The park is the home of a winter time ice rink at the pavilion, as well, and Bairdford Park is currently in the process of being “upgraded” as part of a phased Park Master Plan completed in 2013.

Also located in West Deer Township is Deer Lakes Park, which is owned by Allegheny County. It contains more passive recreation, such as fishing, picnicking, hiking/trails, and a new water park. Deer Lakes Park is beautiful, and offers recreation all within natural setting. The park provides great amenities, including multiple pavilions and large playgrounds, and is in the process of upgrades itself.

Another park that is part of the aforementioned Park Master Plan is the Nike Site. This is a former U.S. Army Nike missile site that was donated to the Township by the federal government when the facility was closed and environmentally remediated. The Nike Site is home to the Township Senior Center, Deer Lakes Youth Football, and two large soccer/lacrosse fields. Renovated parking, entrance road, and a new walking trail is scheduled for 2016-17.
West Deer Township also maintains two small “parklets” in the Russellton II and Curtisville I neighborhoods. These are smaller parks designed primarily for younger children in the neighborhood in an effort to give them a safe place to play.

In addition to the parks above, West Deer Township has a ballfield and and natural area on Blanchard Road.
